Korea Launch of the State of World Population Report 2021
Published yearly since 1978, the State of World Population is a flagship report by the UNFPA. Each edition covers and analyses developments and trends in world population and demographics, shedding a light on emerging issues in the field of sexual and reproductive health and the unique challenges and opportunities they present for international development.

This year’s edition of the State of World Population “My body is my own - claiming the right to autonomy and self-determination" calls for bodily autonomy for all. This report marks the first time that women’s power to make autonomous decisions about sex and reproduction and the extent to which laws and policies enable or hinder individual decision-making have been measured. According to the report, nearly half of women in 57 developing countries and denied the right to decide whether to have sex with their partners, use contraception or seek health care. Only 71 per cent of countries guarantee access to overall maternity care. Twenty countries have “marry-your-rapist” laws, where a man can escape criminal prosecution if he marries the woman or girl he has raped.

During the 100-minutes online forum UNFPA will share the main findings and recommendations of the State of World Population Report 2021. Also, both experts from different parts of the world and policy makers, civil society and other stakeholders from Korea will exchange their first-hand experiences in upholding women and girls’ decision-making power, lessons learned and their thoughtful insights into the topic of bodily autonomy.
